We designed this (300kW / 3000N-m / 20,000rpm) dynamometer (electric motor test stand) for electric motor testing and can apply the same technology for engine dynamometers. We included, variable voltage buses, both water and oil cooling and the ability to utilize any readily available inverter, so a variety of electric motors can be tested. Motors are tested in a back to back manner with the power flowing to / from a common grid, so power usage is minimized. Key design considerations are the ability to utilize standardized off-the-shelf sensors, to reduce cost and downtime, and the ability to operate in a strictly manual mode. Manual mode operation allows us to commission these dynos in a very rapid manner - usually a matter of days - not months like a fully computer controlled dyno. We can add automation if it is required. In most cases, cost is a major consideration in the design of our dynos. We have built and commissioned dynos with high capabilities, in many cases, for 25% of the cost of well known dyno companies.
