Systems Solutions Engineering helped Arnold Magnetics in Rochester, New York engineer and build these electric motors for electric turbochargers; as well as develop Arnold Magnetics’ business capabilities around high performance motor materials. These motors utilize high temperature Samarium Cobalt magnets and can operate up to 120,000rpm. They are about the size of a can of soda pop -- i.e. they fit in your hand. Dependent on loading, we also engineered liquid and air cooling for these motors and we developed some significant IP for the eTurbo and cooling technology.
During our time at Remy International (which is now Borg Warner), we helped to develop the high voltage hairpin motor and manufacturing processes. These motors offered world-class power density. Since then, we have further developed cooling systems for motors and inverters that take power levels up another 10%, with minimal investment. Also, when we were at Remy, we developed the concept of the off-the-shelf motor business to optimize capital investment and expand our market capabilities, which brought these motors to small and medium sized customers.
